Professional Sidewalk Inspection Program
How & how often to do a sidewalk inspection
Your sidewalks and walkways are an asset like any other that require maintenance and repair to properly provide value. If that maintenance is not performed they can turn from an asset into a liability to lawsuits and injury. Sidewalks are typically meant to last for decades, but weather, erosion, plant growth, impacts, and earth movement can shorten that usable lifespan and create safety hazards that did not exist only a few months earlier. For this reason experts recommend a thorough sidewalk inspection program at a minimum of every year. The most useful standard for performing these inspections is that set by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. This federal law specifies that sidewalk inspection programs should make their walkways equally accessible to the disabled. A simple tactical way to do this is to note any gap or lift of 1/4 inch or more. Slopes steeper than 1 to 12 are likewise out of compliance. The ADA also gives guidance on smoothness of the surface and transitions between walkways and roads. |
Our sidewalk inspection process
PRECISION Trip Hazard Removal has performed tens of thousands of sidewalk inspections for cities, schools, parks, apartment complexes and HOAs in San Diego County, Imperial County and Temecula. We employ specially trained sidewalk inspectors that can quickly spot, and note the types of safety hazards they find digitally. Each hazard will be measured and noted on a digital map along with photos. For cities, schools, parks or large property management companies that use GIS data, this map and it’s accompanying data can be easily imported and overlaid on your existing digital GIS maps. Each hazard will be marked or disregarded depending upon your specifications. If you only wish our inspectors to look for lifts greater than 1 inch, we can provide that. Likewise, expansion joint problems, drainage problems, or damaged concrete needing to be patched can all be noted separately or not at all. Typical projects take less than a day, but larger neighborhoods make take several days to fully inspect and document. Our inspectors carry simple hand-held tools and will not disrupt your everyday activities in order to make their report. Once you receive your report you will have an accurate understanding of the safety and liability risks, their severity and what it would take to repair them.
