Safety

Improve Walkway Safety

In a recent poll of Southern California property managers, Precision Trip Hazard Removal learned that the #1 concern was safety. A few reasons for this are the effects of a fall on the health and perceptions of the employees, tenants, and visitors to the property.

If the fall causes significant injury this also increases liability to a lawsuit or costly settlement. The average cost of a trip and fall settlement is $40,000.  Compare these costs to the relatively low costs to regularly inspect and repair property walkways and it’s simple to understand why property managers would be concerned.

Trip hazards caused by tree roots and soil settling typically develop from nothing in 6-12 months, but earthquakes and erosion can cause the same safety hazards in a few minutes or hours! If you have trees, new construction, sprinklers, storms, or earthquakes in your area then you are at risk of these safety hazards on your property.

PRECISION Trip Hazard Removal has repaired over 5,332 miles of broken concrete across the United States, Canada and in Australia. Over the course of these repairs we've learned a thing or two about improving walkway safety that we can pass on to you. If you manage sidewalk maintenance or walkway safety on city streets, commercial properties or schools we want to share new techniques and processes that will make your job easier and less stressful.

Sidewalk Safety Standards & Products

Are there sidewalk safety standards? Yes! City engineers have differing standards, however one standard everyone should agree on is set out in the ADA (American's with Disabilities Act.) If you follow this standard you will meet or exceed other standards. The ADA sets out standards about slope and smoothness that are meant to help the disabled to have equal access on walkways.

In regards to sidewalk safety hazards like cracks or lifted edges that can cause trips and falls the standard is currently 1/4 inch. Any crack or lift over 1/4 inch is not only a safety hazard but makes it more difficult for the visual or mobility impaired. In fact, often the big, obvious sidewalk safety hazards get repaired, but the smaller hazards between 1/2 and 1/4 in height will not be noticed and become the source of injuries.

Sidewalk safety products should ideally fix problems down to 1/4 inch according to the ADA. Most repair options that exist do not completely remove the sidewalk safety hazard, but rather only reduce it or remove parts of it. PRECISION uses a unique patented method that removes 100% off the sidewalk safety hazard 100% of the time.
